Legal and ethical issues are identified and resolved for the planned production (M2)
Shooting Location Tech Scouting Checklist - Ensures that the planned location(s) are well suited for both the needs of the shoot and also those of the cast and crew. It allows the personnel involved in the production to be aware of any limitations ahead of time and give them time to prepare for these in advance. Due to the nature of the small and potentially mildly dangerous shed location in which the majority of the film is to be recorded, this is of great importance.
Risk Assessment - Allows the cast and crew to prepare for or simply be aware of any potential dangers and/or hazards present at the location of the shoot. In terms of our shoot, the small enclosed space once again poses potential risks which need to be considered ahead of time.
Location Shoot Agreement/Location Release Form - Ensures that the owner(s) of any property which you hope to record content on and/or in have given their written permission for you to do so. This ensures that there are no legal issues in use of these required locations. While the locations used are owned largely by family or friends of the production team, it is still good practice to ensure a legal agreement with them for use of their property.
Rights/Talent Release Form - A written agreement between the producer(s) and any actors involved to ensure no legal issues arise during the production and distribution processes and in the long-term. While all involved are friends of the director, it is also still good practice to ensure a written legal agreement with them.
Copyright Issues:
- All music and sound effects used in the film will be either created by me, royalty free or used only with the express written permission of the legal rights holder.
- No imagery besides my original work or royalty-free material will be visible in the project.
Ethical Issues:
The concept of a character being tricked or arguably kidnapped into joining a cult-like organisation may be a sensitive topic for survivors of somewhat similar situations. Otherwise, however, there is very little material which I can see being potentially offensive to general audiences. While the lead character is being played by a straight, white male this factor is completely irrelevant to the story itself and due to the first-person nature of the short they will rarely be seen anyway. Moreover, if and when this concept is developed into a feature film, the cast will be able to be broadened to be more diverse.
