Analyse how post-production techniques and processes create meaning in the media product to meet the client brief (D1)

The opening of the film sets the tone and style for the short as a whole, introducing this as seemingly a recording of various adverts to a VHS tape in the early 2000s. This is how the short would be presented and promoted if used as marketing material for a feature-length expansion of the concept. The second advert in the recording introduces the concept of the New Wellness Clinic, something likely seeming inconspicuous on first viewing, but with the context of the remainder of the film appears more sinister. This then cuts off just as the threatening terms and conditions text in the lower third of the frame appear. The scene then transitions to our protagonist - Travis - picking up the camera while contained within a wooden waiting room structure. This marks the transition from analogue horror to found footage, with the implication being that this was recorded directly over the adverts previously on this tape. Within this scene, the unnerving introductory...

Demonstrate how the exported media product meets the client brief (M4)

The use of TV advertising-style scenes will likely act as nostalgia appeal to the brief's implied target age range in and of itself, as members of Gen Z likely grew up watching traditional linear TV and its constant advertising. The same can be said for the VHS aesthetic and the use of the 4:3 aspect ratio throughout. All of these are things which this generation has largely moved on from, making their use here serve as something of a throwback to their childhoods. This is especially significant as the nature of the short's distribution will be such that those explicitly in search of such nostalgic content will be the ones to naturally find it. The implication of some form of malicious or otherwise suspicious company will likely appeal to Gen Z, as there are heightened fears of such situations, and it is becoming increasingly commonplace to question such entities and their true intentions. The very brief appearance of the menacing terms and conditions show ...

Create production material that follows the codes and conventions of the chosen genre for the media product (P4/M3)

Examples of these include the strong and authentic VHS effect present throughout the film. There will also be a jumpscare of sudden noise from a TV, likely helping to cause a visceral reaction of fear in viewers (Rick Altman's audience pleasures).  The film will also be visually dark, another convention of the horror genre. In line with Steve Neale's repetition and difference, the concept of a cult-like organisation is something which has been done before, but not mixed with more recent analogue horror-styl...

Legal and ethical issues are identified and resolved for the planned production (M2)

Shooting Location Tech Scouting Checklist - Ensures that the planned location(s) are well suited for both the needs of the shoot and also those of the cast and crew. It allows the personnel involved in the production to be aware of any limitations ahead of time and give them time to prepare for these in advance. Due to the nature of the small and potentially mildly dangerous shed location in which the majority of the film is to be recorded, this is of great importance. Risk Assessment - Allows the cast and crew to prepare for or simply be aware of any potential dangers and/or hazards present at the location of the shoot. In terms of our shoot, the small enclosed space once again poses potential risks which need to be considered ahead of time. Location Shoot Agreement/Location Release Form - Ensures that the owner(s) of any property which you hope to record content on and/or in have given their written permission for you to do so. This ensures that there are no legal issues in use of...

Justify content, distribution and marketing methods identified for the planned production to meet a client brief (M1)

Content Audience research conducted earlier in pre-production determined that one of the most popular film series within the Gen Z demographic is Saw, giving us an idea that horror is a very popular genre within this group. Millennials were discovered to make up around 40% of horror movie fans, and were also the first generation to be introduced to The Blair Witch Project, meaning that there is a higher chance that they will have some nostalgia for the found footage subgenre. Distribution The audience research I conducted earlier in pre-production revealed that a reasonable amount of members of the Millennial and Gen Z generations - this film's target demographics - are still fans of watching films in cinemas. Evidence suggests that (at least pre-COVID in 2019) Gen Z are the most frequent cinemagoers, with 43% saying they'd seen a film in a cinema within the past month. As such, we will aim to give the film a limited cinema release before working out a deal with...
